Two Thorns players win gold for USA

Sophia Smith and Sam Coffey will be returning from Paris as Olympic gold medalists after the United States women’s soccer team defeated Brazil 1-0 to capture gold at the 2024 Olympics. 

Overall, six Thorns players were named to Olympic rosters. In addition to Smith and Coffey, Janine Beckie and Jessie Fleming represented Canada, Mackenzie Arnold played for Australia, and Nicole Payne competed for Nigeria. A record 56 NWSL players participated in the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Smith played a particularly crucial role for the US, scoring three goals in the tournament including the winner against Germany in the semi-final game.
